Lev Kontorovich (b. 1947, Moscow)

Lev Kontorovich finished Sveshnikov Moscow State Choral School (1964) and graduated with honors from the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory (1969) where he studied choral conducting with Prof. Klavdy Ptitsa, symphony orchestra conducting with Prof. Leo Ginzburg and orchestration with Prof. Alfred Schnittke.
After graduating from the Conservatory Lev Kontorovich returned to the Choral School as a choir conducting teacher and conductor of boys’ choir and 1992 has been appointed the head of Choir Conducting Department of Academy of Choral Arts named after V. Popov before he has been invited to the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory. Since 1996 — Professor, and since 2012 — Head of the Department of Choral and Orchestral conducting at the Moscow Conservatory. His students are working successfully in choirs, opera houses and educational institutions in Russia and abroad.
L.Kontorovich has produced many concert programs consisted of choral works of different epochs and genres including Russian and European spiritual music. He performs spiritual choral music by such famous Russian composers as Alexander Archangelsky, Dmitriy Bortnyansky, Maxim Berezovsky, Petr Tchaikovsky, Sergey Rachmaninoff, Pavel Chesnokov; works by Mikhail Glinka, Miliy Balakirev, Nikolay Golovanov, Dmitri Shostakovich, Georgiy Sviridov, Alexander Sveshnikov. Prof. Kontorovich also willingly performs the music of composers Moscow Choral School alumni, such as Vladislav Agafonnikov, Rostislav Boiko, Valery Kikta, Alexander Fliarkovsky, Rodion Shchedrin, Yuri Evgrafov, and Dmitriy Dianov.
Prof. Kontorovich participated in international festivals of Bach’s music in Germany, International Festival of boys’ choirs in Grasse (France), Poznan (Poland), the European Festival of Orthodox Music, dedicated to the 1000-th Anniversary of the Christianization of Russia (Moscow, Germany, France, Luxembourg), European Symposium on Choral Music in Ljubljana (Slovenia) and others.
In 1997 he created the Chamber choir «Spiritual revival» of the Moscow State Institute of Music named after Alfred Schnittke which has appeared on the stage of Kremlin Palace together with Dmitri Hvorostovsky and the Yale Alumni Choir within Hvorostovsky’s “Invitation tour” (2003).
In 2005 Lev Kontorovich was invited to take up the post of Artistic Director of the Grand Choir «Masters of Choral Singing» of The Russian State TV and Radio Music Centre. The Choir receives an enthusiastic welcome in best concert halls in Russia, Italy, France, Germany, Israel, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Japan, South Korea, Qatar, Indonesia and other countries. The Choir “Masters of Choral singing” often tours in Russian regions including Urals, Siberia and Far East.
In the year 2013 by executive order Prof. Lev Kontorovich was conferred with the rank of Peoples’ Artist of Russian Federation.
In 2017 he has been decorated with the 1-st dergee medal “Fame and Honor” ща the Russian Orthodox Church.

Creative activities of Prof. Lev Kontorovich:
2013 – Artistic Director of All-Russian workshop “National Youth Choir” run for the students of Russian high schools and academies; The organizer of master-class of Prof. Helmuth Rilling the founder of the Schtuttgart International Bach’s Academy (Germany) in Moscow Conservatory.
2014 – Vice-president of Jury of the Boris Tevlin I-st International Choral Conductors Competition (Head of Jury – People’s Artist of the USSR Rodion Shchedrin)
Sisnce 2014 – Principal chorus master of the big united choir at the Day of Slavic Literature and Culture feast.
2015 – The Chairman of Jury of the All-Russian Choir Festival organized by All-Russian Choral Society; Principal conductor of Russian Children Choir at the Gala reception in Kremlin (Conductor – Valery Gergiev); Principal conductor of united choir of All-Russian Choir Competition participants in the Theatre of Russian Army.
Since 2015 – The Chairman of Jury of the All-Russian Music Competition for choir conductors.
2016 – Principal chorus master and the juror of the IX World Choir Games in Sochi.
2017 – Jury Chairman and Principal chorus master of the united choir of All-Russian Choir Festival.
2018 – Jury Chairman of the II Boris Tevlin International Choir Conductors Competition.

Prof. Kontorovich regularly holds master classes in Russia (Moscow, Astrakhan, Belgorod, Perm, Volgograd and other cities) as well as abroad (Bulgaria, the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica).
Lev Kontorovich is the author of numerous arrangements and transcriptions of world musical masterpieces for mixed choir a’cappella, among them Well-tempered Clavier by J.S. Bach.
