MARY STEWARD - GAETANO DONIZETTI
Opera in two acts (with one intermission)
Libretto by Guiseppe Bardari after the play by Friedrich von Schiller
Performed in Italian
Mary Steward, previously Queen of Scotland, imprisoned on the instructions of Queen Elizabeth, is suspected of plotting to take over the English throne. Elizabeth is advised by Lord Burleigh (Cecil) in the interest of security to execute Mary. Both Talbot and Leicester ask her to show mercy on Mary. Elizabeth is jealous of Leicester’s obvious involvement with the prisoner, but agrees to meet Mary while out hunting. Face to face, the two Queens find no common ground. Elizabeth insults Mary, who abandons her submissive attitude and hurls abuse in return. After this Elizabeth condemns her to death, despite Leicester’s exhortations. Mary goes to the scaffold with dignity. Watched by Leicester, she dies.
