Artistic Director: Maestro Igor Moiseyev
Ensemble: The State Folk Dance Ensemble named after Maestro Igor Moiseev

Igor Moiseyev is one of the dance world's most highly decorated choreographers, previously honored as a People’s Artist of the Soviet Union and responsible for single-handedly creating a new form of national dance. Blending traditional ballet, bright costumes, irresistable music, rural folklore and ritual, and pure fun on an impressively large scale, his dancers have performed in more than 60 countries, including at world-class venues like the Paris Opera and Washington’s Kennedy Center. It's an all-ages affair, and one that shouldn't be missed.

History of ballet

Igor Moiseyev state academic ensemble of popular dance was established in 1937 as a first professional folk dancing company in the world. Its founder is an outstanding Russian ballet-master and choreographer Igor Moiseyev.

On February 10, 1937, Igor Moiseyev gathered together a core of approximately forty dancers in a studio on Moscow’s Leontievsky Street. The nascent company included the very best dancers from amateur companies across the country, and a handful of professional ballet dancers from the Bolshoi School and other classical companies.

Since 1940 the Company is based at the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall.
Igor Moiseyev is the pride and glory of 20th Century. For more than half a century he has remained the symbol of highly professional and the same time of extremely sincere and hearty art.

Nowadays the repertoire of the dance Company contains about 300 dances of the peoples of the world as well as dances, choreographic picture, miniatures, suites and one-act ballets such as the "Polovetsean dances” (music – A. Borodin), "A Night on the Bald Mountain”(music – M. Musorgsky), "At the Skating – Ring” ( music- I. Shtrauss); the "Spanish Ballade” (music – Pablo de Luna), "An Evening in the Tavern”, Jewish suite "Family Joys”.

Such a genre variety of the repertoire permits to consider the Company a true Academic theatre of folk dancing. Having turned to folklore the Moiseyev company brought to stage its virgin purity, sunny love of life, optimism, light and life power. The company is implementing a great mission of bringing peoples together, summoning human sincerity and openness.

In 1943, for the first time in the world practice, Igor Moiseyev organized a school – studio of folk dance – virtuoso and master, able to master various styles and characteristic modes of dancing. Starting to work with a little group of enthusiasts Igor Moiseyev has brought up actors of great artistic culture. What Moiseyev has achieved since 1937 is something like dancing encyclopedia of people’s life.

In 1967 the company was given the name of an Academic Dance Company. During the period of its existence the company has played on tour in more then 60 countries of the world, being accompanied everywhere by a triumphal success.

In 2011 Igor Moiseyev Ballet was awarded gran-prix at the Italian professional choreographic award "Anita Bucchi" for the best performance of 2011.

During triumphal tour in Paris, in December, 2011, to the 75 anniversary of Igor Moiseyev Ballet, UNESCO awarded the company by the "Five continents" medal.

On the 10th of February 2012 Igor Moiseyev state academic ensemble of popular dance celebrated its 75th anniversary by gala performance in the Bolshoi Theatre.

During 2013 – 2015 Igor Moiseyev Ballet has gone on tour in 18 countries such as Turkey, Mexico, Jordan, Poland, Austria, Italy etc.

The repertoire of the company includes choreographic works by Igor Moiseyev, starting in 1937. By genre features all the dances are divided into choreographic miniatures, dance picture, a suite of dances, one-act ballets. Thematically dances are merged into cycles "Pictures of the Past", "Soviet pictures" and "For the countries of the world."
