One of the most famous works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart for the first time in the history of ballet as delivered .

Libretto by Emanuel Schikaneder as amended by the artistic director of the theater " Kremlin Ballet " Andrei Petrov - a story about love boys and girls who have to overcome many obstacles to be together and to understand whether they are worthy of each other. Burning love heart, struggling with the darkness and deception , the laws of wisdom and kindness dominate the instincts . On this difficult path for young people to help the forces of light (wizard Sarastro - sage , seer ) and otherwise interfere with the dark ( Queen of the Night ) . But the main engine of the plot - the divine Mozart's music with her magic flute and bells as magical .

Act I


Small Mozart plays a harpsichord and is amused with a magic lantern: paper little dragon suddenly gets the huge sizes …


1 scene. «In mountains»

Escaping from the Dragon, Prince Tamino has lost his way in mountains. He’s rescued by three ladies - maids of honour of the Tsarina of Night.

Having regained consciousness, Prince sees fowler Papageno, who pretends that he has rescued Tamino. The Ladies are revolted by bragging and punish the deceiver. They inform Prince that he was rescued by Tsarina of Night. She sends him a portrait of her daughter Pamina. Tamino falls in love with a portrait.

2 scene. «Mountains part»

Tsarina of Night assures Prince Tamino that magician Zarastro has stolen Pamina. The prince goes to rescue the girl. He receives from Tsarina a magic flute which will help to overcome the evil, and Papageno gets the magic hand bells, for what he is obliged to serve the Prince.

3 scene. «Again mountains»

Accompanied by three pages Tamino and Papageno starts their way.

4 scene. "Castle of Zarastro"

Monostatos is ordered to protect Pamina and should comply with her requests, instead he scoffs at her and puts her into iron. He is secretly in love with her.

Papageno gets into a room where the unfortunate is hidden. He and Monostatos are frightened, seeing each other. Monostatos escapes. Papageno tells Pamina about Prince Tamino who has fallen in love with her. The girl is intrigued and agrees to run away. Monostatos rushes to a pursuit.

5 scene. «A sacred grove in front of the Temple»

In a sacred grove the pages shows Tamino the road to the castle of Zarastro.

The prince is ready for everything to rescue the beauty and to marry her. Aspiring to get into the castle and to call Pamina, Tamino starts playing a magic flute.

Wild animals listen with pleasure to his playing, reminding enthusiastic musical critics.

Tamino runs on a sound of a pipe of the fowler. Papageno and Pamina are overtaken by a pursuit but suddenly the magic hand bells sound! Monostatos and his soldiers start dance and run away.

Tamino and Pamina meet at last. Under bewitching sounds of a magic flute flying in the air the love is born in their hearts.

With his suit appears magician Zarastro. Pamina complains to him of Monostatos who in his turn discredits Tamino. But Zarastro - is wise: Monostatos deserves his punishment for his lies, but the enamoured should be for a while separated, because a number of tests before they can incorporate.


Act II

6 scene. «A palm garden»

In a sacred palm garden Zarastro says to priests that Tamino and Pamina are intended for each other, and that Tsarina of Night wishes to destroy the Sun and Wisdom Temple. It is necessary to accept Tamino in number of devoted, and with his help prevent a gloom of Night to eclipse Sun and Wisdom light. But before that Prince needs to be tested. Zarastro uplifts entreaty to gods. Priests blow in sacred trumpets.


7 scene. «A hall of tests»

Night. Tamino and Papageno stay in darkness. The thunder roars. Priests with torches prophesy happiness not only Tamino, but also Papageno. Having mastered all tests the Fowler too can find the girlfriend to himself.

Three ladies - maids of honour of Tsarina of Night frighten Tamino and Papageno of death. Only the fowler fears, but to Prince the reason orders to hold his feelings and remain firm and proof.


8 scene. «A palm garden at night»

Monostatos creeps to Pamina sleeping at garden pavilion to kiss her. Occurrence of Tsarina of Night forces him to hide. Tsarina of Night gives to the woken up daughter a dagger in order to kill Zarastro. Tsarina of Night disappears, and Monostatos who has overheard the conversation, again approaches Pamina. Having received resolute refusal, he raises a dagger over the girl, but having seen Zarastro, escapes.

The magician calms the sobbing beauty and promises her happiness with her favorite when he will pass all the tests.

9 scene. «A hall of tests»

A new trial awaits Tamino and Papageno: to sit without having stirred, whatever it happens. Tamino remains immovable, even when Pamina comes. The girl is upset of indifference of her favourite, without knowing the true reasons.

And the fowler cannot sit still. In revenge an old woman approaches him. However, soon she turns to be the playful beauty that at once changes the situation.

10 scene. «A palm garden at night»

Pamina, having been undeceived in love of Tamino, wishes to stab herself to death by a dagger, but pages stop the girl, convincing that her beloved is true to her.

11 scene. «Sufferings of Papageno»

Papageno so grieves without love of Pamina that he is ready to hang himself. But pages recommend causing beloved by modulations of hand bells. And it works! Magic sounds call young Papagena, the intended of the fowler. So music reunites a happy pair.

12 scene. "Meeting"

Pages help Pamina to find the beloved. But ahead last test - Fire and Water. The magic flute again plays. Having embraced, enamoured resist to elements. What a pleasure! All alarms are behind.


13 scene. «Plot of Tsarina of Night»

Tsarina of Night together with three maids of honour and Monostatos aspires to destroy the Wisdom Temple. Zarastro accepts the challenge. Lightnings sparkle. The thunder rattles.

The bright sunlight shines over Tsarina of Night and her suit. They instantly disappear.


14 scene. «The sun temple»

Victory! The sun of Reason has disseminated a night gloom. Zarastro unites the enamoured. They are worthy each other! Everyone glorify the wisdom of the magician and beauty of the young.

Music - small Mozart again plays a harpsichord...


Act I


Scene 1.
There is the celebratory excitement in the quarters of the bodyguard of Svetozar, Great Prince of Kiev. Lyudmila must choose an intended husband. Then the suitors appear Farlaf, an arrogant Varangian duke, and Ratmir, a dreamy Khazar prince. Ratmir is pursued by Gorislava who is in love with him with a plea to aban¬don Lyudmila.
Here is Ruslan. Mutual love has had long but until then secret links between Lyudmila and a Kievan knight. But Khazar princess’ choice is done. The Prince and his armed force praise the young couple. The wedding ceremony begins. Then – thunder… Lightning…
The sinister figure of an evil sorcerer Chernomor arises. Lyudmila freezes. An evil sorcerer abducts her. Ruslan is in despair. Svetozar promises Lyudmila will be a wife of the hero who returns her to father. The competitors leave Kiev.
Scene 2.
The scene of enchanted forest appears. Naina is chasing Finn with her love. He rejects her. An evil sorceress swears to have revenge. Finn meets Ruslan – Ruslan notices Lyudmila in the smoke of the magic fire. He thanks Finn and leaves to search Chernomor’s castle… Naina is on watch for Farlaf. She promises that Lyudmila will be his. Naina gives Farlaf everything he was dreaming of downy bed and the table full of viand. Overwhelmed with wine and gluttony, he falls asleep and forgets about Lyudmila.
Scene 3.
Ruslan puts out to the field: the remnants of bloody carnage are visible. The knight is in doubt. “Will I find Lyudmila or fall dead like these unknown warriors?” There is a hill in front of Ruslan – it is The Head. The Head spills into a great num¬ber of warriors. The battle is fierce and the forces are unequal, but Ruslan goes out a winner. The warriors are diverted: The Head is replaced with a magic sword.
Scene 4.
Naina is hexing and tries to lure the knights. Her escort is the swarm of ugly crones who are transforming into beautiful girls. The forest turns into the magnificent oriental palace. Naina is on watch for a victim and preparing the poisoned drink for Ratmir… Gorislava persistently follows Ratmir but a proud Khazar prince is longing to find Lyudmila, though Gorislava is dearer and closer to him. Ratmir leaves his crying girlfriend and enters Naina’s palace. The magic girls, wine and viand – and here is Ratmir who lost his shield, sword and helmet. Naina’s spells force Ratmir to forget about everything in the world. Gorislava, Finn and Ruslan appear in the palace. They release Ratmir.

Act II

Scene 1.
Lyudmila awakes in the Chernomor’s castle. Trying to make love with Lyudmila, Chernomor turns into Ruslan. But Lyudmila feels deception – it is an angry dwarf in front of her. Lyudmila tangles the magic beard of the villain.
The Chernomor’s servants appear solemnly bearing the dwarf and his beard. It is the sorcerer’s might parade. The vortex of lezghinka captivates all the participants. Lyudmila is almost unconscious. The dwarf slowly approaches his victim… The sound of horn rings out. It is Ruslan who challenges Chernomor to a battle. The battle is short and fierce. The dwarf takes Ruslan in the clouds…
Scene 2.
Ruslan defeated the dwarf but Lyudmila is sleeping the spellful sleep and doesn’t recognize her sweetheart. Ratmir and Gorislava come to help Ruslan.
Scene 3.
Naina drags palsied Farlaf – his hour has come. Fear makes him submit. They are chasing the traces of Ruslan.
Scene 4.
Night in the wilderness comes. Ruslan is guarding Lyudmila asleep but he is very tired so he falls asleep too. Naina and Farlaf appear. Farlaf drives a sword into Ruslan’s chest and abducts Lyudmila. Naina triumphs. Suddenly Finn appears with the water of death and the water of life. Ruslan’s wounds heal. The charac¬ters are heading for Kiev. Naina is defeated and her plans are destroyed.
Scene 5.
Farlaf, who abducted Lyudmila, brought her back to Kiev. But nobody can awake her from magic sleep. She can’t recognize even her father…Great Prince of Kiev mourns over his daughter. But suddenly Ruslan runs in. His love awakes Lyudmila from her sleep. Faint-hearted Farlaf begs for mercy. There are the happiness and jubilation in the Prince Svetozar’s palace. Russian people glorify the brave knight and the young princess…
