At the basis of the ballet there is a country song about two young people, different in their social position, who love one and the same girl. One of them is noble and honest, and the other is mean and violent. Many Russian dancers, such as Ulanova, Pavlova and Koritskaya, found Chiselle’s part as important for their career as “The Dying Swan”. True and strong feelings, presented by the language of the dance, become a real masterpiece of the dancer’s skill. In Moscow “Giselle” was staged in 1843 for the first time.

THE SUMMARY OF THE BALLET

Act One

There is a small, lightened by the sun, village. Simple, honest people live there.

A young peasant girl Chiselle is glad to see the sun, the blue sky and the birds’ songs. But most of all she is happy, because her life is alighted by love, trusting and pure. She loves and believes she is loved. The forester Hans tries to convince Chiselle, that her beloved Albert – is not a peasant, but a nobleman, making fool of her. Hans loves Chiselle himself, but his words are not heard.

The forester gets to Albert’s house that the rest rents in the village and finds a silver sword with an emblem. Now he is absolutely sure, that Albert conceives his origin.

Noble men with their suite often stay to rest in the village after hunting. Peasants give a kind and cheerful welcome to their rich guests.

Albert is confused by this unexpected meeting, as he sees his bride Batilda among the guests. At that very moment exasperated forester shows Albert’s sword to everybody and tells about his deception.

Chiselle is shocked by her lover’s guile. The pure and clear world of her hopes, dreams and believes is broken. She gets insane and dies.

Act Two

The ghost of the brides, dead before the wedding – valises – appear at night in the moon light near the graves of a calm village cemetery. “They are dressed in wedding dresses, decorated with flowers… extremely wonderful. The valises dance in the moon light. They dance and dance as more passionately as they feel that the hour of their dance is coming to an end, and they are to go down to their graves, cold as ice”. (G.Geine).

The valises notice the forester – he feels guilty, he has come to Chiselle’s grave. Following the order of their determined governess Mirth, the valises whirl the forester in a mystic round dance, until he falls down breathless.

Albert can’t forget lost Chiselle. Late at night he comes to her grave. The valises round the young man at once. A terrible forester’s fortune is ready for Albert. But Zhiselle’s shadow protects him from the valises’ anger. Pure and self-sacrificing love helps and saves Albert.

With the first sights of the sun the white ghost of the valises disappear. Light shadow of Chiselle disappears too. But for ever she will live in Albert’s memory as a constant sorry and dream of lost love. Love that is stronger than death.
