UNESCO included the Holy Trinity Cathedral choir in Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Founded in 1998 at the initiative of the Catolicos of all Georgians Ilia II, the choir has become a symbol of Georgia’s modern spiritual culture. It is a constant participant of the services in the main Georgian Orthodox Cathedral on the mountain of St. Ilia in Tbilisi (the cathedral’s construction have been accomplished in 2004).

The repertoire of the choir of 60 brilliant singers consists of polyphonic Georgian church songs, performed exactly as many centuries ago, and folk songs along with spiritual music of contemporary composers.

Simon Dzhangulashvili, the music director, believes that his choir is a very complicated instrument that requires finest tuning, since it is sensitive to every gesture. But at the same time, the choir is capable to perform any music however complicated it can be: “We have manuscripts, we have thousands chants, and it is a real treasure, for there are some of the chants that are sung by us only”.
