The annual International Festival called “Epiphany Week at Novaya Opera” and dedicated to the outstanding Russian conductor Evgeny Kolobov is held during the Great Orthodox Festival of Bogoyavlenie, and this is no mere coincidence. For the Maestro was born on January 19, Kreshchenie (the Epiphany), and it seems that the Holy Spirit marked his selfless devotion to Music. The “Epiphany Week at Novaya Opera” is a celebration of Music for those who know and remember Evgeny Kolobov and who love Music to which he devoted his brilliant life. Each Epiphany Week Festival presents a parade of conductors, ranging from young talents to masters of contemporary conducting, opera singers and musicians from different parts of the world, who take part in the premieres, concert programmes and best productions of the Novaya Opera Theatre which was founded by Evgeny Kolobov.

As 2013 sees the bicentenary of the birth of Giuseppe Verdi (1813–1901), the 9th International Festival “Epiphany Week at Novaya Opera” is dedicated to the great Italian classic whose operas have been the backbone of the repertoire of opera houses worldwide over the last two centuries. Verdi is a titan of music. His works were highly appreciated by Evgeny Kolobov, who said: “Verdi is one of the most mysterious composers in the Universe. The seeming simplicity of his music conceals an inexhaustible emotional and conceptual depth. Probably, therein lies the mystery of all classical heritage, whether it be Verdi, Michelangelo, Pushkin or Shakespeare…”

The Festival’s programme includes Verdi’s magnificent trilogy of Rigoletto, Il trovatore and La traviata composed in the 1850s. Il trovatore, a premiere of this season, has been produced by an Italian team. The part of Manrico is sung by Georgian tenor George Oniani, a soloist of Stadstheater Bonn, while Count di Luna is performed by Vitaly Bily, who is in high favour with the Moscow public. The Novaya Opera’s very successful productions of Rigoletto and La traviata are also on the programme. Verdi’s early works are represented by NO’s production of Nabucco and concert versions of the rarely performed operas I lombardi alla prima crociata and I due Foscari. The Festival presents two great examples of the composer’s mature work: the magnificent opera Aida in concert, with Oksana Kramaryeva of the National Opera of Ukraine as Aida and American tenor Carl Tanner as Radames, and the monumental Requiem. The Festival’s culmination and synthesizing finale will be the grandiose gala concert “Viva Verdi!” embracing Verdi’s entire opera legacy.

The Novaya Opera Theatre seeks to follow precisely the Italian opera style. This is the reason why the theatre has invited Italian producers and conductors to stage Verdi’s operatic compositions. The production team of Il trovatore includes stage director Marco Gandini, set designer Italo Grassi and costume designer Simona Morresi, who work with major opera houses in Italy and worldwide. Among the guests of the Festival are internationally recognized Italian conductors Alberto Veronesi, who will conduct Nabucco, and Fabio Mastrangelo, who will conduct Rigoletto. An invaluable contribution to the mastering of performing styles has been made by the Europe-class musician Jan Latham-Koenig (UK), who is the music director and conductor of the Novaya Opera’s productions of Il trovatore and Requiem.
