Katia Skanavi (Piano soloist)

KATIA SKANAVI, of Greek-Russian heritage, studied at Moscow‘s Gnessin Academy, the Conservatoire National in Paris and the Moscow Conservatory. She continued her studies at the Cleveland Institute with Sergei Babayan. At seventeen, as the only Russian and the youngest contestant, she entered the Marguerite Long - Jacques Thibaud Competition in Paris. She was awarded both Third Prize and the Audience Prize, and was named concert soloist for the gala at Salle Pleyel - an honor usually reserved for the First Prize winner. She also won the Maria Callas Competition in Greece and was awarded Greek citizenship.

Katia Skanavi has performed in numerous festivals, including France‘s La Roque d‘Anthéron International, Lockenhaus, Festival Laon, Clermont-Ferrand and for Radio France at the Printemps des Serres d‘Auteuil in Paris. She has performed as soloist with many orchestras including the Georgian State Symphony at Amsterdam‘s Concertgebouw, the Dallas, San Francisco and Indianapolis Symphonies, the Residentie Orkest in the Hague, with Ottowa‘s National Arts Center Orchestra, with the Casals Festival in Puerto Rico, the Carlsen Center in Kansas, the Gidon Kremer Festival in Switzerland and the Festival Internationale Isola d‘Elba. Recital performances include a highly-acclaimed debut at the Frick Collection in Manhattan, a series of recitals in Japan sponsored by the Japan Music Foundation, at the Ravinia‘s Rising Star series, the Cliburn Concerts series in Fort Worth, the Gilmore International Keyboard Festival in Kalamazoo, and the Kennedy Center‘s Terrace Theater.

She won the Cliburn Competition‘s prize for Best Chamber Music Performance. She has appeared with violinist Maxim Vengerov and the Keller Quartet at the Divonne Festival, with cellist Truls Mørk at the Stavanger and Gulbenkian festivals and joined the Rossetti String Quartet on tour in the United States. She has recorded many CDs for the French label Lyrinx. Her Chopin recording on Pro Piano label was named "Classical CD of the Month" by Gramophon.
