The place of battle is a gambling-table, the aim is the card win. The game emasculates people’s relations, deprives the characters their honour, shuffles them recklessly like a card pack. It’s not the old Countess who knows the price of this game, but eternally young and wise beauty…
SYNOPSIS
The poor young man Herman has fallen in love with a girl who his friend Count Tomsky tells him is engaged to Prince Yeletsky. Her name is Lisa. She is a granddaughter of the Countess who was once known as the Queen of Spades because she possessed the secret of the «three cards».
Lisa returns to Herman’s love and he becomes obsessed with learning the secret of winning at gambling so as to win money to marry Lisa. He demands the secret from the Countess, but she dies of stroke without saying a word.
Lisa asks Herman to meet her by the river, where the ghost of the Countess reveals the secret to Herman and tells him to marry Lisa.
When they meet, Herman confirms Lisa’s fears that he now cares more about gambling than about her by rushing off to gambling house. In despair, Lisa drowns herself in the river.
Herman wins on the first two cards and stakes his all on the third, but loses to Yeletsky who draws the Queen of Spades. Herman curses the Countess, whose ghost appears to him, then kills himself.
