Nederlands Dans Theater

Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT) is one of the world’s leading contemporary dance companies, under artistic guidance of Paul Lightfoot. NDT is based in The Hague, but performs for over 115.000 visitors in Europe as well as in the USA, Asia and Australia. Since its foundation in 1959, this rebellious pioneering company has built a rich repertoire of over 600 ballets, by master choreographers such as Jiří Kylián, Hans van Manen, renowned house choreographers Sol León and Paul Lightfoot, associate choreographers Crystal Pite and Marco Goecke and high-profiled guests such as Johan Inger, Medhi Walerski, Alexander Ekman, Gabriela Carrizo, Franck Chartier, Hofesh Shechter, Edward Clug, and Sharon Eyal & Gai Behar.

The main company NDT 1 consists of 28 dancers from all over the world, varying in age between 24 and 38 years old. Though sometimes greatly differing in educational backgrounds promoting distinguishing styles, each one of the dancers excels in their solo qualities. The performers are renowned for their virtuosity, astonishing technique and unparalleled expression. In 1978, NDT founded a second division to feed the main company with young talent. During a three year trajectory, NDT 2 prepares sixteen classically trained dancers for the world top, possibly for a position with NDT 1. NDT 2’s varied repertoire consists of work by established choreographers as well as upcoming talents, such as Jiří Pokorný, current NDT 1 dancers Imre van Opstal and Marne van Opstal. One of the objectives of NDT 2, is to acquaint the dancers with a lexicon of dance languages. By working together with upcoming choreographers the dancers are provided with the opportunity to experiment with a multitude of styles that often require an interdisciplinary approach by involving visual art, music composition, and innovative light and set designs, all the while developing new talent. At NDT’s home base in The Hague, all this comes together daily in surroundings that are regarded as a breeding ground, constantly moving ahead to make a significant contribution to the future of dance.

Season 2016-2017 presents nine world premieres by former NDT dancer Medhi Walerski, but also Jiří Pokorný, Sharon Eyal and Gai Behar, associate choreographers Marco Goecke and Crystal Pite, NDT house choreographers Sol León and Paul Lightfoot, Imre van Opstal and Marne van Opstal and NDT 1 dancer Jianhui Wang. Last mentioned will create new work for Up & Coming Choreographers. Apart from many performances throughout the Netherlands, NDT will also grace renowned stages in many cities around the world, among which New York, Montreal, Budapest and Paris.

Paul Lightfoot Paul Lightfoot (1966, England) is Artistic Director of Nederlands Dans Theater since September 2011. Lightfoot has been with the company since 1985; first as a dancer, then as a choreographer together with Sol León. They became renowned choreographers and were appointed as house choreographers of Nederlands Dans Theater in 2002. To date, Lightfoot and León have created over 40 choreographies for the company, for which they received many dance awards and are performed around the world. Lightfoot is, alongside his role as Artistic Director, house choreographer for Nederlands Dans Theater.
Janine Dijkmeijer Janine Dijkmeijer (1963) has been managing director of Nederlands Dans Theater since March 2014. She is responsible for the daily operations of the company, next to artistic director Paul Lightfoot. In 2003 Dijkmeijer founded the international dance film festival Cindedans, which grew out to the highest rank of international dance film festivals. As a dancer Dijkmeijer worked with various choreographers such as Krisztina de Châtel, Conny Janssen, Leine and Roebana, Paul Selwyn Norton, Francesca Harper (Ballet Frankfurt), Amanda Miller, Gideon Obarzanek (Chunky Move Australië) and Gary Stewart (Australian Dance Theatre). In 1999 she received the Golden Theatre Dance Prize (Golden Swan) and the Prize of Merit of the Dansersfonds '79.

House Choreographers: Sol Léon & Paul Lightfoot

In their 27 years as a choreographic duo Sol León and Paul Lightfoot have built a rich repertoire of over fifty ballets which show a wide range of compelling pieces that, however diverse, share a strong, innovative artistic voice. They have mastered a powerful, yet tender and sometimes humorous dance aesthetic that is consistently rooted in emotion and often leans on theatrical aspects. As house choreographers of NDT since 2002, the artistic voyage of both choreographers and their partnership, is a celebration of their unpredictable and idiosyncratic style, and their inexhaustible work ethic. León and Lightfoot have shown no fear in bearing their fragility, their euphoria or their personal struggles through their work. By doing so they have given colour to the company as one that is not afraid to take artistic risks and that pushes the boundaries of creativity, highlighting NDT as one of the best modern dance companies on national and international level.

Sol León (Córdoba, Spain) and Paul Lightfoot (Kingsley, England) started creating as a duo for NDT over 26 years ago. Since then the duo have created more than fifty pieces for Nederlands Dans Theater. In 2002 they were appointed house choreographers for the company exclusively. Together they have won prestigious awards, such as the Benois de la Danse and the Herald Archangel.

Sol León joined NDT 2 after graduating from the National Ballet Academy of Madrid in 1987. Two years later she joined NDT 1 and danced masterpieces of Jiří Kylián, Hans van Manen, Mats Ek and Ohad Naharin. She continued to dance up until 2003, when she decided to fully devote herself to choreography. León became Artistic Advisor for NDT in 2012.

Associate Choreographer: Marco Goecke

Marco Goecke

Marco Goecke (1972, Wuppertal) joined NDT as an associate choreographer in season 2013-2014. His latest work Woke up Blind (2016) for NDT 1 premiered in season 2015-2016. Earlier, he created Nichts (2008), Dutch dance Zwaan Award 2012 nominee Garbo Laughs (2012), Hello Earth (2014), and Thin Skin (2015). In season 2016-2017 Goecke’s Thin Skin will be performed in the NDT 1 programme Stage One (premiere on September 22, 2016) and for the NDT 2 programme Smoke and Mirrors he will create a new piece.

In 1988 Marco Goecke completed his ballet education at the Heinz-Bosl-Stiftung Ballet Academy in Munich, after which he graduated at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague in 1995. Subsequently Goecke worked together with the Deutschen Oper Berlin and the Theater Hagen. Here Goecke made his first choreography in 2000. Since then Goecke is one of the world's most sought-after choreographers, due to his particular movement language. Goecke's work is performed by dance companies worldwide.

Associate Choreographer: Crystal Pite

Crystal Pite

Choreographer and performer Crystal Pite (1970) lives and works in Vancouver, Canada. She is an associate dance artist at Canada's National Arts Centre and at Sadler's Wells, London. Since 2008 she is also associate choreographer with NDT for which she created: Pilot X (2005), The Second Person (2007), Frontier (2008), Plot Point (2010), Parade (2013) and In the Event (2015). Plot Point got nominated for the prestigious Benois de La Dance award. Her latest work for NDT is The Statement which premiered on February 4, 2016.

From 1988 to 2001 Pite was part of the Ballet British Columbia in Vancouver and William Forsythe’s Ballett Frankfurt. She created work for the Cullberg Ballet, Cedar Lake, Les Ballets Jazz de Montreal, Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet, Ballet British Columbia, Alberta Ballet, The National Ballet of Canada and various freelance artists.

In 2002 Pite founded her own company in Vancouver, Kidd Pivot. Integrating movement, original music, text, and rich visual design, Kidd Pivot’s performance work is assembled with recklessness and rigour, balancing sharp exactitude with irreverence and risk. Kidd Pivot's residency at the Künstlerhaus Mousonturm in Frankfurt (2010-2012) provided Pite the opportunity to create and tour her most recent works, The You Show and The Tempest Replica (both 2012).
