Running time: 2 hours 45 minutes.

The plot of the opera is based on the miraculous resurrection by Jesus Christ of Lazarus from Bethany, which is described in the Gospel of John (11: 1-46). Librettist A.G. Niemeyer greatly expanded the narrative at the expense of poetic reflections of the heroes of the opera about death and life, fear and faith. He also introduces characters that are mentioned in the New Testament, but are missing in the eleventh chapter of the Gospel of John: Simon, Nathaniel, and Emin.

"Lazar" is a unique opera: it is difficult to find another composition, which two-thirds of the action tells of death, but is filled with such light! This music is not about darkness and suffering, but about faith and joy. Amazingly beautiful melodies permeate the opera (combining the simplicity of the songs, theatricality of the opera and the elevation of the Mass), the instrumentation is transparent, there are no low voices among the soloists, and the major only occasionally gives way to minor. All this creates a feeling of inner light - spiritual, divine - which radiates the entire opera. After all, light, true beauty and harmony are ideals to which both Schubert and Denisov have been faithful all their lives.
