The world premiere of Georges Bizet's opera Carmen took place in 1875. The libretto by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy is based on the novel of the same name by Prosper Mérimée. The action takes place in Spain in the first half of the 19th century. Love for the gypsy Carmen makes Sergeant Jose to forget about his fiancée Mikaela and quit the service. But the fatal beauty already promises her love to the bullfighter Escamillo. Unable to accept, Jose kills his beloved.
The central idea of the performance is a clash of two principles: male and female. It is emphasized by the presence of a ballet couple on the stage - a kind of choreographic parallel to the main line.
