Ari Rasilainen (Music Director)

Born in 1959, is in the top category of successful young Scandinavian conductors. He studied conducting at Professor Jorma Panula’s famous conducting class at the Sibelius Academy and also under the late Arvid Jansons (conducting) and Aleksander Labko (violin) in Berlin.

In 1989, Rasilainen participated in the International Nicolai Malko Conducting Competition in Copenhagen, in which he received 2nd prize.

Before embarking on a full time career as a conductor, Ari Rasilainen played violin with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra and, from 1980 to 1986, principal 2nd violin with the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra. He had appeared both as a solo violinist and as chamber musician and still plays chamber music.

From 1985 to 1989, Ari Rasilainen was Chief Conductor of the Lappeenranta City Orchestra in Finland and after that Principal Guest Conductor of the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra.

In 1994, Rasilainen was appointed Chief Conductor of the Norwegian Radio Orchestra Oslo. In addition, he appears regularly with other major Scandinavian Symphony Orchestras. Rasilainen performed in the United States and in various countries in Europe, more recently with the BRTN Philharmonic Orchestra, Prague Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra of Opera North Leeds, and the Frankfurt, Leipzig and Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestras. For Finnish National Opera he has conducted Lohengrin, Die Zauberfloete and in 2001 Tosca.

Ari Rasilainen conducted the NDR-Radio-Philharmonic Hanover in the opening concert of EXPO featuring Jose Carreras as soloist and a live-broadcast by ZDF (Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen) from the Schauspielhaus Berlin with the Berlin Radio Symphony in the annual concert of the ‘ECHO-KLASSIK’ Award. Featured soloists included Montserrat Caballe, Daniel Barenboim, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Nigel Kennedy, Anne Sofie von Otter, Marcelo Alvarez, Filippa Giordano, Arcadi Volodos, Christian Zacharias, Ulrich Herkenhoff and Charlotte Church.

His on going recordings with the Norwegian Radio Orchestra appear exclusively on the FINLANDIA RECORDS label. He is also recording of the complete Symphonies by Kurt Atterberg for CPO.

Since January 2002 Ari Rasilainen has been General Music Director of the Philharmonic Orchestra of the State of Rheinland-Pfalz in Germany.
