Dmytro Popov (Tenor)

Biography

Ukranian tenor Dmytro Popov began his career at a young age, as a soloist with the Kiev National Theatre where he made his professional debut as Lensky in Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin

He came to international attention in 2013 when he performed the role of Rodolfo in Puccini’s La Bohème at The Royal Opera House Covent Garden, covering for Rollando Villazon. 

From here, his global career took off and Popov has performed multiple roles across the world at significant opera houses. Highlights have included; Nicias (Thais) at the Teatro Regio di Torino, Pinkerton (Madama Butterfly), Cavaradossi (Tosca) and Rodolfo (Luisa Miller) all with the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Vaudemont (Iolanta) with the Teatro Real de Madrid, Macduff (Macbeth) with the Opéra National de Lyon, Andrei (Mazeppa) with the Opéra de Monte-Carlo and Riccardo (Un Ballo in Maschera) at the Theatre du Capitole and most recently Carmen in concert at the Verbier Festival under Charles Dutoit. 

As well as being an experienced character performer, Popov is established on the concert platform having performed works including Rachmaninov’s The Bells with the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome conducted by Antonio Pappano and with the Berlin Philharmonic conducted by Sir Simon Rattle. Other performances have included Verdi’s Requiem for the Tanglewood Music Festival and with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and A Life for the Tsar at the Festival Radio France, Montpéllier. 

In 2016 he made his Bolshoi Theatre debut as Vaudemont (Iolanta), and in 2018 performed the role of Jose in Carmen

In the season 2015/16 he sang Alfred (La Traviata) at Wiener Staatsoper and Zurich Opera, Cavaradossi (Tosca) at Staatsoper Stuttgart, Koln Opera and Dresden Semperoper. He sang Jose (Carmen) at the Teatro Regio di Torino and Staatsoper Hamburg. 

Among engagements of the season 2016/17: Pinkerton (Madama Butterfly) at the Berlin State Opera Unter den Linden, Rodolfo (La Bohème) at Metropolitan Opera, New York and Le Grand Theatre de Geneve, Pretender (Boris Godunov) and Princ (Rusalka) at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, The Duke (Rigoletto) at the Latvian National Opera, Vaudemont (Iolanta) and Alfred (La Traviata) at the National Theatre in Prague. 

Recent engagements include Tosca at Staatsoper Stuttgart, Carmen at Opernhaus Zürich, Rusalka at the Wiener Staatsoper, Un Ballo in maschera at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, La Rondine at the Theatre du Capitole and a stage version of the Verdi Requiem at the Hamburgische Staatsoper. 

He has recording Rachmaninov’s The Bells with the Berliner Philarmoniker, conducted by Sir Simon Rattle and released on EMI (2013) and working with many great conductors including Antonio Pappano, Valery Gergiev, Kent Nagano, Kazushi Ono, and Vladimir Jurowski to name a few. 

Popov became the youngest ever opera artist to be granted the title of ‘Honoured Artist of Ukraine’ (2003). In 2007 he also became a prize-winner of the Placido Domingo Operalia Competition.
