Ilya Demutsky (Composer)

Works list includes orchestral, choral, chamber, piano, vocal, electronic and film music.

Born 1983. Graduated from Choir College named after Michael Glinka, Demutsky earned Master’s degree in choral conducting from Saint Petersburg State Conservatory. In 2007-2009 he won a Fulbright scholarship to pursue a Master of Music in Composition at San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where he studied with David Conte.

Demutsky’s primary conducting teachers include also Anatoly Yemelin Igor Rogalyov. He has also studied in workshops, masterclasses, summer programs, and privately with John Adams, Narcis Bonet, Alden Jenks, Philip Lasser, Michel Merlet, Mark Shapiro, Conrad Susa and others.

Demutsky has been an active performer in various choral societies of St. Petersburg (Russia) and San Francisco (CA, USA), as well as a conductor of choirs and instrumental ensembles. Demutsky is an artistic director of the prize-winning Cyrillique Ensemble.

As a film composer, Demutsky has worked extensively with Emmy, TEFI and Nika award-winning film director Sergey Miroshnichenko (“Born in the USSR: 28 Up”, The official film of the Sochi 2014 Olympic Games “Rings of the World” and others). He has also composed music for the Paralympic Games Sochi 2014 Opening Ceremony.

Demutsky’s compositions are regularly performed all around the world. Among performers of his music are Cyrillique Vocal Ensemble, Clerestory Vocal Ensemble, Subito Vocal Ensemble, Pacific Mozart Ensemble, San Francisco Conservatory Chorus, Saint Petersburg State Conservatory Chorus, Capella Taurida Chorus, Smolny Cathedral Chamber Choir, San Francisco Conservatory Orchestra, The Symphony Orchestra of Orpheus Radio Station, State Symphony Orchestra of the Republic of Tatarstan, Saint Petersburg State Academic Symphony Orchestra, Teatro Comunale di Bologna orchestra, Belgorod State Symphony Orchestra and others.
