Brilliant Classical Stanislavsky Ballet and Opera theatre (established 1887, founded by Stanislavsky)

Press release

Royal Festival Hall, London

Judith Mackrell
Saturday January 10, 2004
The Guardian

The Royal Festival Hall has a long tradition of showing family-friendly ballets at Christmas, but since the defection of the now English National Ballet to the Coliseum it seems to be looking to Moscow Stanislavsky Ballet to fit the bill. It‘s an arrangement that suits RFH‘s inclusive remit perfectly, for this company dance the classics with a simple, unthreatening directness.
The designs are real fairy tale - from the vaulting gothic interior of Prince Siegfried‘s palace to the pine-forested lakeside, complete with floating model swans. The story-telling is also painstakingly clear, for when Vladimir Bourmeister choreographed this Swan Lake for the company in 1953, his mission was to ensure that every thought and feeling passing though the ballet‘s characters was logically expressed.

Review from The FT.

The Moscow Stanislavsky ballet troupe and orchestra, in the confines of the Festival Hall stage, trotted out their fragment of the True Cross on Wednesday night.
The trick is the statement that this is nearer the score that Tchaikovsky first wrote. This is what Mrs Eddy might call a False Claim, because what Petipa and Ivanov and Riccardo Drigo edited in 1894/95 for the Mariinsky Theatre is much better in shaping score and action which, in Tchaikovsky‘s original, are unbalanced.

Swan Lake
By Debra Craine for The Times

WITH so much children’s entertainment at this time of year it’s refreshing to find something for grown-ups as well as for kids. And the Swan Lake at the South Bank this week is one of those attractive, old-fashioned productions that draw the coach-party audience so much in evidence at the Festival Hall on Wednesday night.
It comes courtesy of the Moscow Stanislavsky Ballet, which brings Vladimir Bourmeister’s 50-year-old Soviet production to London in highly romanticised designs (by Vladimir Arefyev) which sit far better on this stage than they did two years ago when the company made its UK debut.

Swan Lake
By David Dougill for The Sunday Times

At the Festival Hall the Moscow Stanislavsky Ballet reprised its version of Swan Lake, which we first saw two years ago. It is not easy to accommodate a ballet of this scale on the fit-up stage, and on the opening night, as usual, you could hear the Russian stage crew arguing behind the curtains about the technicalities. Scene changes may be awkward, but Vladimir Arefyev’s designs are handsome — a prettily painted vista, a romantic rocky lakeside, a palace ballroom of filigree gold.
